IPX and Mobile Interconnection

The explosive growth of mobile data services and the constant demand from users for new generation international roaming services makes it essential that operators manage their interconnects more efficiently than ever before.

With more than 1100 networks worldwide, the need to manage interconnectivity has never been more important and the requirement for efficiency never been more essential.

Mobile Operators:

  • have been reacting to this by adopting a structure that consolidates the number of interconnects in the attempt to increase their efficiency and control their costs more efficiently;
  • are encouraging applications service providers to migrate from the older legacy-based applications to new improved IP based session services including their lucrative text-based messaging services.

IP based networking technology will enable network operators to manage these new services more efficiently than ever before.

The GSMA response to that evolutionary path is the IPX architecture that introduces the following benefits to the Mobile telco’s community:

Openness:

  • The IPX is an open network that allows interconnection with mobile operators, fixed operators, service providers, content providers and other IPX networks to interoperate with one each other.
  • The IPX network supports multiple services and different types of traffic, enabling operators to add services easily without major changes to their network infrastructure.

Quality:

  • The IPX ensures a quality user experience, free from spam and cyber-attacks of whatever kind, and managed by a multiplicity class and quality of service.
  • The IPX network provides access to private networking between interconnecting operators that is fully managed to ensure a high level of security.

Cascading Payments:

  • Using the principal of cascading payments, multiple business models may be crafted for specific compensation requirements among Mobile telcos.
  • IPX enable Peering Partners to interoperate seamlessly.

In order to effectively face a fast and safe migration toward IPX Interconnection, Lab3iNet approach is ready to assist Customers with:

  • Assessment of the existing architecture
  • Gap analysis
  • Definition of target solutions
  • Evolution plan and roll out to introduce the new IPX features such as:
    • Security: i.e. IPX private IP backbone not addressable from Internet
    • Quality: End to End quality management by prioritizing real-time services and allow IPX/SP providers to commit to service level agreements (SLA)
    • Multiservice capability:  enabling support to a variety of services, such as voice, video, messaging.
    • Multiple interconnect business models: e.g. multilateral service Hub model with guaranteed End to End QoS and cascading of payments.
